Abby Lamott loves cats. Especially her kitty...Pumpkin.

The 10-year-old, a fourth grader at Amesbury Elementary School, recently decided to forgo gifts at her birthday party. Instead she asked her family and friends to make a donation to the Merrimack River Feline Rescue in Salisbury, MA. That's where her family adopted Pumpkin.

Abby's mom, Michelle, says the idea was born one afternoon while cleaning Abby's room.

Michelle says, "We were cleaning her room, and I was overwhelmed by all the toys. When I asked what she wanted for her birthday, and pointed out she probably has enough toys, I suggested making a donation to anyplace she wanted. She instantly wanted the Merrimack River Feline Rescue."

Her family and friends were more than enthusiastic. With their donations, Abby was able to give the shelter two dozen cans of cat food, four cat carriers, a dozen cat toys, three bags of kitty litter, and a $50 cash donation.

After the party, Michelle says Abby told her how awesome the donations are. And she loves helping out the shelter.
