The anniversary of his demise came and went on Sunday with little fanfare. I suppose 12 isn't one of the notable anniversaries like ten or twenty. Still, it seems worthy of remembering.

Waking the morning of May 3rd 2003 to the news that The Great Stone Face had tumbled away was as surprising as it was difficult. I think most native New Hampshirites were surprised by their emotional reaction: we'd never even considered that he could be gone someday and then, just like that, he was. I'll admit to having shed a tear.

It's been a dozen years and I still miss seeing that profile. For a reminder of what was, a visit to the Old Man of the Mountain Profile Plaza will transport you back. Franconia remains quite possibly the prettiest spot in New Hampshire New England the world, it's just missing an old familiar face.

Here is a nice tribute I found on YouTube courtesy of New England's Insomniac Theatre.
