(Rindge, New Hampshire)- Andrew H. Card, former White House chief of staff, former Franklin Pierce trustee, and most recently acting dean of the George H.W. Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, was announced today as Franklin Pierce University’s fifth president.

“Andy brings extraordinary experience and leadership to the presidency. He brings a strong vision for Franklin Pierce, one that will serve our students, staff, and faculty very well,” said Michael C. J. Fallon, chairman of the board of trustees. “His experience running the prestigious Bush school and his intimate knowledge of Franklin Pierce from his years on the board were very attractive to the board when making the decision.” Card is a native of Holbrook, Mass., and served on Franklin Pierce’s Board of Trustees from 1996 to 2000.

Card first entered public service back in 1975 when he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Card went on to serve in President Reagan's administration in various roles, including deputy assistant to the president and director of intergovernmental affairs, where he was liaison to governors, state legislators, mayors, and other elected officials.

From 1988 to 1992, Card served in President George H. W. Bush's administration as assistant to the president and deputy chief of staff, where he managed the daily operations of the White House. From 1992 until 1993, Card served as the 11th U.S. secretary of transportation. In August 1992, at the request of President Bush, Card coordinated the Administration's disaster relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Andrew. Later that year, Card directed President Bush's office during the transition from the Bush administration to the Clinton administration. From 1993 to 1998, Card was president and chief executive officer of the American Automobile Manufacturers Association.

On November 26, 2000, Card was appointed chief of staff to President-elect George W. Bush, where he later would be known as the person who informed the president that the country was under attack on September 11, 2001. Card's last day as chief of staff was April 14, 2006, making him the second-longest serving White House chief of staff. From 2011 to 2014, Card served as acting dean at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University and as executive director in the Office of the Provost.

Card replaces outgoing president James F. Birge, who served since 2009 and had announced his intent to resign last summer.  Dr. Birge’s last day as president will be Jan. 9, 2015; Card’s first day will be Jan. 12.
“The trustees recognize that the selection of the university’s president is our most important responsibility,” Fallon said. “We reviewed a wide range of qualified candidates for the job and we are fortunate that we attracted someone of Andy’s stature and achievement. When Andy showed interest in the position, we were given a moment of opportunity. And we seized that moment.”

Card graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. He attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and has received numerous honorary degrees and awards. He and his wife have three children and six grandchildren.
