Angry New Hampshire Town Wants to Eliminate Police Department

A sexual assault case involving the town's chief of police has some taxpayers looking at drastic measures.

Residents of Canterbury, New Hampshire are so fed up with their local police force that they are looking to remove it altogether.

The Concord Monitor reports that sexual assault charges against now-suspended police Chief John Laroche have lead to serious discussions on what to do with Canterbury's police department.

Laroche is accused of forcing a young female cadet to perform sex acts on him while he was a police chief in another New Hampshire town. He was indicted by a grand jury in October and is currently on unpaid leave.

The sexual assault accusations are just some of the problems that the local population have with their police force. Angry citizens claim that bad behavior from police officers calls for the removal of the department altogether.

Much of that anger came out in a meeting on Monday, where accusations like " lying sack of s--t" were thrown out, according to NH1. Citizens shared their stories about the unreasonable behavior and apathy shown by members of the police department.

A petition, which gained over 100 signatures, calls for the Canterbury Police Department to be removed and "police protection can be provided by the State Police and/or the Merrimack County Sheriff Department.”

No major decisions were made by the selectmen regarding this issue on Monday as they called for patience during the process.
