The Supreme Court's decision to turn away same-sex marriage appeals from some states with bans is allowing a threshold to be crossed in parts of the conservative South. Gay and lesbian couples are getting legally married for the first time in Virginia. Similar bans in West Virginia and the Carolinas are expected to fall soon. But opponents also vow to fight on, hoping some federal appeals court upholds a ban and pressures the high court to hear a case.

Carroll County Judge says he's inclined to reduce sex offender sentence
A judge's statement that he is inclined to reduce the sentence he gave a convicted child sex assailant has sparked indignation by prosecutors, domestic violence coalitions, the victim and her family. Carroll County Superior Court Judge David Garfunkel sentenced Joshua Baud last month to 7 1/2 years on two convictions of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl eight years ago. Four days later, Garfunkel said he intended to reduce Baud's sentence to six years. A hearing to discuss it is scheduled for today.
