You have the moment all planned: You know where you're going to ask the big question. You know exactly what you're going to say. And you know when you're going to pull out the ring.

But, is the ring going to be a surprise? Or something you picked out together?

Jewelry Creations in downtown Dover typically doesn't see couples shopping together for engagement rings, although the one doing the shopping often comes in with a picture and a clear indication as to the style she would prefer.

This Cosmopolitan editor advocates for couples to shop together, but the opinions were split when we put the question to followers of Jewelry Creations' Facebook page.

In the end, like most things related to weddings and relationships, you should consider what is best for the two of you and take everyone else's advice with a grain of salt.

BUT when you are ready for ring shopping, there are some things you should keep in mind:

1) Shopping at a local jewelry store gives you more security than an online shop: You can try it on, learn about the 4 Cs (cut, color, clarity and carat), be assured the stone is genuine and receive free appraisals and complementary cleanings.

2) Size might not be the most important thing. Some people want the biggest diamond they can afford (and there's nothing wrong with that), but sometimes larger rings mean more prominent inclusions (imperfections), according to Jewelry Creations' website.

"Most importantly, if the diamond cut isn't proportioned correctly, it won't return the maximum amount of light through the top of the diamond," the website states. "This illustrates that no matter how large the diamond, its cut and proportions determine how brilliant the diamond really is."

3) Don't rule out diamonds that have some color. "Since diamond colors range from colorless to yellowish-brown, sometimes these colors can add warmth or depth to your diamond," the Jewelry Creations website states. "Also, by mounting a non-colorless diamond in yellow gold can make the diamond appear colorless in some cases."
