Can you spot the differences on Central Avenue in Dover since it was filmed in the early 1960's?

Kudos to the soon-to-be-unveiled website entitled Made in Dover who made the Dover connection to the 1962 Stanley Kubrick film "Lolita."

In their recent Facebook post, Made in Dover made note of the "Lolita" which uses an early 1960's shot of Central Avenue, which i supposed to be fictional "Ramsdale, New Hampshire" in the film's plot.

At the time, director Stanley Kubrick had just relocated to England.  He suffered from a severe fear of flying and worked mostly from the U.K so much of the film was shot there. However Kubrick did use shots from the Northeast portion of the United States including Upstate NY & Dover NH.

Usually when you see old photos, there are more trees in the given location than you might find there today.  Such is not the case here.  In fact, since the film was shot in town, trees planted on both sides of Central Ave have grown into full-sized trees!

The Cupola on top of City Hall is the most recognizable figure in the old photo.  Many if not all of the businesses in forefront of the shot are gone.  Although, further down Harvey's Bakery still resides in downtown Dover as it has since 1932.

The IMDB file on the film lists an amazing cast including Shelley Winters and Peter Sellers. Nelson Riddle (whose musical career included collaborations with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, Johnny Mathis & Rosemary Clooney to name a few) holds a music credit.

The full film is available in it's entirety on YouTube for all of you old-school movie buffs out there.
