It's a sad day in the sports broadcasting community and for fans of ESPN.

There's no way you could watch ESPN and not know who Chris Berman is. As host of the ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown for 31 years, Berman was a pillar of the sports network, hired one month after it went on the air in 1979.

Sadly, Berman's wife, Katherine, was killed in a car crash yesterday afternoon in Woodbury, Connecticut, just one day before Chris's birthday. Another driver was also killed in the crash.

According to State Police in Connecticut, Berman's 2003 Lexus struck the other driver in the rear, causing it to veer off the road and down an embankment before overturning in a pond.

Katherine Berman was pronounced dead on the scene. The other drive died at the hospital. Police are still investigating what caused Berman to crash into the other driver.
