Good News/Bad News: Lower Gas Prices Result In More Traffic Deaths
(Washington, DC) - Gas prices continue to fall, but one consequence has been more traffic fatalities this year.
A recent report by a the National Safety Council says that lower gas prices and a growing economy have led to a record number of miles driven by Americans.
As a result, there have been almost 19-thousand highway deaths in the first 6 months of the year, an increase of 14-per-cent over last year. If the trend continues, highway deaths could top 40-thousand for the first time since 2007.
Gas prices fell another 4-cents a gallon in New Hampshire in the past week. The average price for a gallon of regular is $2.50, a dollar lower than we paid this time last year.
The national average price is $2.68 a gallon.
