Brandy is Karen's dog. Karen says that Brandy is our dog... But that's a lie. It's kind of the reverse of parenting. The kid is "ours" until the first time the police call to ask you to come down to the police station. Then the kid is "yours". Been there, done that.

Anyway... This weekend is Brandy's birthday. It was 4 years ago this weekend that Karen plucked Brandy out of a pen at the Cocheco Valley Humane Society and brought her home. She was skinny, frightened and about as neurotic as you can get.

The folks at the shelter told us that Brandy came from a shelter in Indiana and they really didn't have much info about her. Brandy has been well treated, comes to work with Karen most days, and thanks to Karen, me and the staff here at the station, is a little overweight.

We had help from our friends at The Working Dog Foundation to help Brandy adjust, and she is still a little nervous around new people, most other dogs, loud noises and several other things. But she's actually come a long way in four years and we can't imagine a day without her. When she doesn't come to the office there is a wave of disappointment in the building.

We mentioned her birthday early in the week and a listener was kind enough to send her a card. Thank you!
