WOKQ and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital have teamed up to bring you tips for living a healthier life!
This Spring, it's time to move your body and get back outside! You can exercise and get the recommended level of physical activity by doing anything that gets your body moving. According to the CDC, you should be doing two different types of activity every week to improve your health- aerobic and muscle-strengthening.
Aerobic activity, also known as "cardio", is movement that raises your heart beat. This includes light activity such as walking, shopping or pushing a lawnmower and more moderate activity like water aerobics, doubles tennis, dancing and speed walking. The goal is to try and break a sweat without overworking your body.
As you begin to build your level of cardio, you should try to add vigorous-intensity activity like running, swimming laps, playing basketball or cycling fast and with hills.
Spring is also a great time to get your much needed muscle-strengthening activity. You should aim to work on your strength at least two days a week, and should focus on your core first. A strong core ensures protection of your spine and helps prevent injury. Some of the best strengthening activities include heavy gardening, lifting weights and yoga.
Now that the weather is starting to warm up, it's the perfect time to get outside and get physical!
