Is Proposed Archway in Portsmouth Tacky?

I don't live in Portsmouth, so I don't really have a say in how residents choose to spend their tax dollars. But, umm, can I just say this archway seems sort of tacky?

Portsmouth has seen a lot of changes and a crazy amount of development over the past decade. New condos, hotels, and... more condos. Some people are thrilled with the change and some hate it. Most probably fall somewhere in the middle with regards to their take on the "new" Portsmouth. This arch idea? Man, I just don't get it.

These are the two renderings that have appeared in recent weeks.

It is worth noting that the remainder of the project seems fantastic, as the Music Hall is sort of hidden away down Chestnut Street. I'm all for better visibility for the Portsmouth institution and a better public space on Chestnut Street. Just not a goofy arch.
