The controversial item was found by a Rochester family who was "mortified" that their father was involved with the hate group.

A terrible piece of history has been auctioned off in New Hampshire after it was discovered in an attic.

Auctioneer Scott Morrill sold a 1920s Klu Klux Klan robe that belonged to a Rochester man for $375 in an auction in Dover on Tuesday, according to Foster's Daily Democrat.

The controversial robe was sold after a 30-second bidding war to an unknown buyer. Many called for the item to be destroyed, but Morrill said it is a part of American history.
