Stephen King is, by far, Maine's most famous author.  Heck, he's one of the most famous author's in the entire world.  King's novels are too numerous to mention, as are the movies that have been made based upon his books.  His success has led him to give back.

Sky News reported that King said:

Around 1977 or so, when I started having some popular success, I saw a way to give back a little of the joy the movies had given me.

According to the report, a tutor at the Blaenau Gwent Film Academy in Tredegar, Wales discovered the "Dollar Babies" section of his website.

King's website says:

These stories are not under contract for movies, which means they are available for film students who want to try their hands at a Stephen King story.  If you want to be one of my dollar babies, send us your info.

The students at the school will now work on adapting King's short story, "Stationary Bike," in to a film.  The story is about an artist who begins imagining horrific scenes after being told to cycle to lose weight.

It's not the first time that King has done this.  The report says that a similar deal led to Frank Darabont going on to direct the critically-acclaimed The Shawshank Redemption after he bought another King story, The Woman In The Room, for $1.
