Did you know those kitchy lawn ornaments were invented right here in New England!

Donald Featherstone, the creator of the plastic lawn flamingo passed away earlier this week at the age of 79. Featherstone, invented the pink flamingo back in 1957 for the company he was working for at the time, Union Plastics in Leominster, Massachusetts. Millions of the plastic lawn ornaments have been sold since then.

It was earlier this month that a new television show on the FYI channel featured the plastic flamingos.

According to NBC News, Featherstone modeled the plastic bird after another bird he saw while reading National Geographic.

Donald Featherstone was 79.
