Flag to be removed this morning
South Carolina officials are preparing to quietly remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse this morning. Calls to remove the flag emerged following the fatal shooting of nine people at a black church in Charleston last month, and Gov. Nikki Haley signed a bill to do so yesterday. South Carolina's leaders first flew the battle flag over the Statehouse dome in 1961 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Civil War. It remained there to represent official opposition to the civil rights movement before being moved to the grounds in 2000.

Hassan signs $271 million capital budget
Governor Maggie Hassan has signed into law a $271 million capital budget. It includes funding for a new Merrimack County courthouse and an addition at the state Veterans Home. The budget does not include $4 million Hassan wanted for further study of a plan to bring commuter rail from Boston into Nashua and Manchester.

Man ordered to serve close to 20 years for death of infant
A Maine man charged in the death of an infant last year has been ordered to serve 17 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault charges. As part of a plea deal, a murder charge against Samuel Moore was dismissed. Yesterday, a judge sentenced Moore to 25 years, but suspended part of the sentence.
