Senate to vote on temporary spending bill
The Senate is expected today to pass a temporary spending bill that would prevent the government from shutting down at midnight Wednesday. The House is then expected to approve the measure, which no longer includes a provision to take tax payer funding away from Planned Parenthood. Meanwhile, the president of the organization appears before Congress today for first time since the release of surreptitiously recorded videos in which Planned Parenthood discusses using fetal tissue for research.

Who will replace Boehner?
Who will replace House Speaker John Boehner? House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is moving aggressively to lock up support to succeed Boehner, who resigned suddenly last week. McCarthy let his intentions be known in a letter to fellow lawmakers, saying "If elected speaker, I promise you that we will have the courage to lead the fight for our conservative principles and make our case to the American people." House Republicans will hold a special closed-door meeting today to discuss their path forward.

Vermont man pleads not guilty in sexual assault case
A Cabot, Vermont man accused of getting an underage girl pregnant during repeated sexual assaults has pleaded not guilty. Authorities allege Richard Danner sexually assaulted the girl from the time she was 8 years old. He faces a life prison sentence if convicted.
