Rain in the forecast for wildfire area
Today could be another day of progress against raging wildfires in Northern California if the weather behaves as predicted. Forecasters are expecting some rain in the area where one person has died, thousands have evacuated and hundreds of buildings have burned north of San Francisco. Cooler weather allowed crews to gain ground yesterday.

State lawmakers return to Concord today for veto override votes, including Governor Maggie Hassan's budget veto. The session comes a day after Hassan and GOP legislative leaders reached a budget compromise that includes a pay raise for state workers and business tax cuts sought by Republicans.

Appeal today for Plaistow man
The state Supreme Court today takes up the appeal of a Plaistow man convicted in the severe beating of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son in 2012. Roland Dow's attorneys say the boy's mother, who pleaded guilty to child endangerment, should not have been allowed to testify about Dow's alleged abuse of the boy.
