Can you believe it's that time of year again to run into the frigid waters along Hampton Beach? The annual "Penguin Plunge" weekend benefits Special Olympics of New Hampshire. Both Mark Ericson and I will be there both days. We'll also be joined by WMUR Meteorologists Kevin Skarupa and Mike Haddad!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 31st and Sunday, February 1st. I know, I know, you're saying...but Sunday, February 1st is Superbowl Sunday. Don't worry...we're done in plenty of time to get you home and ready for the big game!

Another day of talks between U.S. and Cuba
Talks today between delegations from the U.S. and Cuba are expected to focus on the broader question of how the U.S. and Cuba can end a half-century of enmity. The nations hope to re-establish embassies and post ambassadors to each other's capitals in the coming months. The two days of talks began yesterday.

State Prison cancellation due to flu outbreak
New Hampshire corrections officials are cancelling visits, classes and at least one parole board hearing at the state prison in concord to prevent further flu contagion. Officials took those measures Wednesday after inmates in three housing units exhibited flu symptoms.The cancellations remain in effect at least through noon on Monday.

Hassan's office says it plans to leave state with surplus at end of budget cycle
Governor Maggie Hassan's office says it has plans that will leave the state with a $1 million surplus at the end of current budget cycle, not the shortfall that lawmakers and budget writers have been warning of for months. The Department of Health and Human Services will present $45 million in savings or cuts to lawmakers tomorrow. Hassan already has ordered other state agencies to cut a collective $18 million.
