5 soldiers dead, 4 others missing
The deaths of five soldiers and the search for four others who are missing after their troop carrier overturned at Fort Hood, Texas has drawn a response from  U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter. He says  the military will attempt to learn from the tragic loss of life  and take actions designed to prevent such accidents once military investigations are completed. Near Nashville, Tennessee, a pilot was killed when his Blue Angels fighter jet crashed .

Portsmouth's chief building inspector charged with assault
Crews have begun repair work on the Peirce Island Bridge in Portsmouth that is expected to continue through the summer months into September. Transportation officials plan to eventually replace the bridge to the city-owned island, which is scheduled to become the site of a new $83.8 million wastewater treatment plant in the future.
