Obama to Vegas for immigration rally
Expecting an outpouring of Republican criticism, President Barack Obama is firing up an effort to gain support for his executive actions on immigration. Obama is starting with a rally today in Las Vegas and the White House is enlisting the aid of immigrant advocacy groups. The plan would make nearly 5 million immigrants living illegally in the United States eligible for work permits and protection from deportation.

Firefighters rescue boys who fall through thin ice
A firefighter crawled across thin ice to rescue two 12-year-old boys who'd fallen into the frigid water while playing hockey at Hood Park. A 911 call from a man who heard the boys screaming caused firefighters enroute to another call to be diverted to the scene, where they found one boy clinging to the ice and the second struggling to stay afloat. A firefighter attached to a rescue line crawled across the ice and pulled the boys out. The remaining seven firefighters pulled the three back to shore. The boys were treated for hypothermia at a hospital and later released.

Maine hunter accidentally shoots himself
Maine wardens say a 30-year-old Mattawamkeag man shot himself in the arm and torso when he lost his footing along a riverbank, causing his rifle to discharge. Wardens say Aaron Burke was in serious condition after the incident Thursday morning.
