Tragedy in Oregon
A witness says a teacher was struck in the head and some students were hit multiple times by a gunman who opened fire in a community college classroom in Oregon. At least nine people were killed and one witness said the attacker demanded to know students' religion before shooting them at Umpqua Community College. Authorities say the shooter, Chris Harper Mercer died after a shootout with police.

Dept. of Health and Human Services to examine procedures
The head of New Hampshire's Department of Health and Human Services says the agency is examining what it could have done better before the death of a Manchester toddler. Katlin Paquette was charged Saturday with second-degree murder in the death of her 21-month-old daughter, Sadence Willott. Police had responded to a call to their Manchester home on Sept. 5 and found the child unresponsive. She died the next day at a hospital.

Dartmouth removes director of Native American Program
Dartmouth College has removed its new director of its Native American Program from her position amid questions about her ancestry and tribal affiliation. The college says the distraction surrounding Susan Taff  Reed's hiring last month was preventing her from effectively doing her job. Reed remains a college employee, however, and a college spokeswoman says officials are exploring ways she can contribute to the campus.
