Winter arrived early in some areas
Winter arrived early in parts of New York state. Up to 9 inches of snow fell in parts of central New York, near Syracuse causing more than 50 accidents, including a pre-dawn crash on Interstate 81 involving 11 vehicles.

Officials considering inmates to conduct suicide watches
State corrections officials are considering allowing inmates to do suicide watches as the state prison system deals with staffing shortages. Commissioner William Wrenn tells the Concord Monitor such a move could be a win-win for both inmates and the department. Such a model has been used at federal prisons for years.

Bridge inspection set for November
The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine, will undergo a multi-day inspection early next month. Officials say drivers using the lift bridge can expect some lane closures during the inspection that begins November 2. The work may take a week
