The Red Sox made some adjustments to their front office and as a result Ben Cherington a native of Meriden is out as General Manager at the end of the current season.

The Sox hired Dave Dombrowski as President of the club, replacing the retiring Larry Luchino. Dombrowski had hoped that Cherington would stay on as GM but Ben decided that he will end his tenure in October after a transition period.

According to The Boston Globe at a media conference today Cherington told the press:

“Let me say first that I want to express my extreme gratitude to John, to Tom [Werner], to Mike Gordon, to Larry Lucchino for giving me this opportunity to do this four years ago,” Cherington said. “I’ve spent about 19 seasons with the Red Sox and it’s been an incredible run – some really good times, some not-so-good times – but I was given the opportunity to do this job and I was rooting for this team for a long time before worked for it, so I’ll always be grateful for that opportunity.”

Ben also went to say he had no problems working with Dombrowski:

“So when I got this information on Saturday, between Saturday and Tuesday I had some time to think about that,” he added. “I was able to gather as much information as I could about what was going on and what that might mean. I came to the determination, in this case, what was best for Dave and what was best for me and what was best for the Red Sox was the same thing, and that was a clean break.”

Cherington also said he has been in touch with other ballclubs:

“I’m going to take some time. I still love the game. I’m 41, so I still want to work. But we’ll see what comes next.”

I am sure we will be hearing good things in the future about the New Hampshire native.
