Most of the state is seen as average on the USDA's natural amenities scale, but some areas received an even worse ranking.

Sometimes when I walk outside in New Hampshire it feels like I live in paradise, but freezing or humid days bring about thoughts to the contrary.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture ranked the desirability of all the counties in America based on "six measures of climate, topography, and water area that reflect environmental qualities most people prefer." This translates to  mild, sunny winters, temperate summers, low humidity, topographic variation, and access to a body of water.

New Hampshire's counties, Belknap, Carroll, Cheshire, Coos, Grafton, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, Strafford and Sullivan all ranged between -1 to 1 on the scale. Ventura County, California, was found to be the most desirable place to live in the country with a ranking higher than 3.

Personally, I would rate New Hampshire higher in the rankings, but I am also incredibly biased as a loyal Granite Stater. Have you SEEN the White Mountains on a clear, sunny day? Or driven through the Monadnock Region in the fall season?

I know that much of what I love doesn't factor into their definition of "desirable," but I like it all the same.

Admittedly we have some pretty terrible weather, but in my opinion it just makes us that much more hardcore. Give us the heat and the horrible winter storms because we can take it.
