Portsmouth is Named a Bike Friendly Community

The League of American Bicyclists has awarded bicycling honors to the Port City.

The organization has named Portsmouth as a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community in a statement released on Wednesday afternoon..The awards are given out in the hopes of encouraging other areas around the country to help create a more bicycle friendly America.

"The League’s Bicycle Friendly America program provides a roadmap, hands-on assistance and recognition for states, communities, universities and businesses. The BFA program is a tool for states, communities, business and universities to make bicycling a real transportation and recreation option for all people."

42 other cities and towns were  included  in the awards bringing the total number of honorees to 350.  Goals of the organization include promoting sustainable communities, improving transportation systems, quality of life and a healthier lifestyle.
