Portsmouth Police Step Up Security Ahead Of Halloween Parade

Last year, the parade drew between eight and ten thousand people.

According to Seacoast Online, Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Merner said he is increasing the number of officers assigned to work during the 24th annual parade, set for tomorrow night in downtown Portsmouth.

The chief told Seacoast Online “This is one of the premier events in Portsmouth." “We want to make sure everyone enjoys the parade in an orderly manner.” Not surprisingly, public drinking and disorderly conduct are prohibited.

While the department isn't anticipating a overly rowdy time, they have taken measures to ensure a safe and fun experience for all. Last year the chief said told Seacoast Online he was impressed with how everything put in place swiftly executed their duties.  Plus, as he walked back home, the chief radioed a department-wide compliment for “a job well done.”

Despite the clean record, the department isn't letting up. The police chief said members of the Seacoast Emergency Response Team will be deployed to the parade area, some in plain clothes, others in SWAT uniforms.
