New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan will announce this week that the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne Point has been authorized by the National Marine Fisheries Service to lead New Hampshire's marine mammal rescue effort.

She will make the announcement Tuesday morning at the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce Bank of America Breakfast.  The center's Marine Mammal Rescue team will respond to stranded, injured and diseased seals, whales, porpoises and dolphins in New Hampshire's coastal region.  This is the first time that a New Hampshire non-profit has led the effort.  The center's rescue team staffs a 24/7 hotline at 603-997-9448 and deploys first responders. The center leads the rescues; the New England Aquarium conducts the necropsy and pathology and the Marine Animal Rehabilitation and Conservation Center at University of New England in Biddeford manages rehabilitation and release of the mammals.  The event takes place at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel, 250 Market Street in Portsmouth beginning at 7:30 a.m.
