No, they simply used rulers. I recently forgot a bottle opener during a hotel stay and struggled for an embarrassing amount of time trying to open a single bottle without shattering it (or my hand). If only I had Swiss ingenuity and a ruler, I could have saved myself a good deal of frustration!
