A sign on the door indicates they plan to open soon

Last night, I was surprised to walk by the former Portsmouth establishment known as "The Page" and see a sign on the shuttered doors stating that a new "La Carreta" location would soon be moving in and opening up for business in the space.

As it turns out, Seacoastonline reported of the news back in October.

For those of you unfamiliar, "The Page" made headlines in April of 2013 when 24 year-old Joshua Krantz tragically died after being involved in a scuffle with another patron, 24 year-old Zachary O'Neill.

In January 2014, O'Neill was given was to 10.5 - 22 years in prison for manslaughter, several months after the bar closed for good.

You may recall that the City of Portsmouth released a statement regarding what the future held for the building. An article in the Portsmouth Patch, dated 6/25/13, quotes city's press release on the matter as saying.....

Rather than be subject to that hearing, The Page has agreed with the City that effective June 21, 2013 at 11:59 PM the restaurant will go out of business permanently.  Moreover, City Attorney Robert P. Sullivan has indicated that no similar night club establishment may re-open at that location, regardless of ownership.

The word "similar" is the operative word here.

As a longtime patron of the La Carreta locations in Manchester, I wouldn't really call it a nightclub. Generally the atmosphere is a family dining experience. However, they do have bars at their locations- which serve hard liquor.

So it begs the question......is this right?  Is it a similar-enough establishment? I feel like it is a different scenario where the intention here is not to open a "nightclub" of any kind.

However, I also sympathize for those who mourn the loss of Joshua Krantz and felt a sense of relief to see the doors of that building shuttered for good.

As for La Carreta's website, nothing is mentioned of the new location. The sign says they plan to open in "Spring 2016" which officially ends in a little over two weeks.
