Kittery residents facing thousands of dollars in unexpected fees are probably feeling much like what is flushing down their toilets.

The Maine town is facing a huge controversy after it was discovered that residents had to pay half of a sewer-exentension project. A total of 158 residents will have to pay an average of $20,000 in sewage betterment fees for the work.

The problem: this wasn't clearly explained in the 2013 bond vote to fund the project.

So now some residents are looking at fees up to $55,000 and are obviously not happy about it. This includes Shawn Fletcher, who had a special guest express his feelings at a public workshop with the Town Council on Monday.

The "Turd Man" perfectly captures the feelings of residents who are being asked to foot the bill for the sewer project.

Turd Man has the same look I would have if I was told that I would be paying tens of thousands of dollars for poop. He represents the burning anger within each and every one of these poor souls who have to fight for justice.

You can also see just how the affected residents feel about the betterment fees in a protest video they released last month. They even have a catchy song to go with it, which always helps spread the word.

Turd Man's creator Shawn wrote a letter to the editor about his situation and how the fees are impacting people like him.
