Hospital executives say the labor and delivery unit at the Lakes Region General Hospital will close, effective May 30th. Expectant women who were planning to deliver at LRGH can now have their babies at Concord Hospital.

An article from WMUR says LRGH's chief executive officer and president Kevin Donovan said the closure needed to happen after several years of decline in the number of babies being born at the hospital, due to an aging population in the area.

Despite the closure, some services for pregnant mothers will remain the same. New mothers will also be able to go to LRGH for care after giving birth.

The article also states that another New Hampshire hospital, Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital, announced it would close its maternity ward on July 15. The hospital will still provide pre-natal and post-natal care, but deliveries will take place at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
