You hear people talk about First World problems, but for a group of University of New Hampshire students, it's about Third World problems.

Global Brigades is a non-profit, student-led organization working for global health in countries like Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.

There was no such movement at UNH until last spring, when student Olivia Myers started a chapter of Global Brigades at her university.

In January,  21 University of New Hampshire health studies and pre-med students will travel to Panama to work with healthcare professionals, learn, assist, and care for patients at a local clinic for 5 days.

We are fortunate to live in a country with great healthcare.  These impressive young health care students made a conscious choice to help people in areas of the world that have limited access to clinics.

The students need to raise enough money to not only pay for the trip, but purchase and bring much needed medical supplies to run the clinic.

According to Olivia Myers, "The overall goal is that over time, these communities will be given enough resources to become sustainable and stand on their own without assistance."

Often, people of Third World countries get the medical education, then move to a First World country for higher pay and a better lifestyle with the intention of going back to help clinics in their home country.

Here's how you can help.  The UNH Chapter of Global Medical Brigades is partnering with Community Oven in Hampton, New Hampshire, on Monday, November 14, from 5-9 pm for a fundraiser.

The fundraiser will feature great food, drinks, and raffles with prizes like gift cards from Old Salt, Wing-Itz, Hop & Grind, The Thirsty Moose, and Airfield Café. The event will also have prizes to escape rooms, Nike shoes, and UNH merchandise.

If you'd like to make a donation to the group's trip, email unhglobalmedicalbrigades@gmail.com.  We are better together.
