Health Tips

WOKQ and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital have teamed up to bring you tips for living a healthier life!

May is Stroke Awareness Month. Did you know that 80% of strokes may be preventable? 80%! The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association have incredible information to keep you safe and alert!

The leading controllable risk factor for stroke is...high blood pressure. Make sure you are aware of your numbers and doing what you can to keep them low. Eating a a well-balanced diet that is low in sodium can help. Limited alcohol consumption, low stress and regular physical activity also play a huge roll in keeping those numbers low!

In addition to diet and exercise, getting adequate sleep is something Americans struggle with. A good night's sleep can do wonders for your physical and mental health...including lowering your risk of stroke. Rest allows you to recharge yourself, meaning you are less likely to reach for processed, sugary foods which provide quick, but fleeting energy.

Most people require seven hours of sleep per night, though we're all different. Remaining active and avoiding caffeine in the afternoon can help you establish a better bedtime routine.

Remember, 80% of strokes could be prevented...if you invest in taking care of yourself. Be mindful and kind to your body and mind. Your health is your life!
