Even though we have yet to see any significant snowfalls in New England, with the exception of the snow that has fallen on the summit of Mount Washington, we all know that nasty winter weather is on the way.

Before too long, we'll be keeping our shovels & snowblowers ready and paying much closer attention to the weather forecasts.

When Will New England See Its First Snowstorm?

Due in part to climate change, New England winters have changed over the last few decades.  In the 80s and 90s, New England often got flurries by early November and had its first real snowstorm by Thanksgiving.  That is not the case anymore.

According to How Much Will It Snow, a website that keeps historical data on snowfall totals, with the exception of the winter of 2018/2019, New England generally does not see a plowable amount of snow until the first or second week of December.

Once it does start snowing, New England often gets buried!  According to On The Snow, Massachusetts generally gets about 41" of snow, Maine gets 63", and New Hampshire often snags a whopping 90"!

On What Day Will Maine, New Hampshire, & Massachusetts See the Most Snow?

After spending some time sorting through the data on the How Much Will it Snow website, we're ready to venture a guess about what day we'll see the most snow this winter.

Over the last few winters, the last week of January has been particularly snowy.  In recent years, that week has often seen several significant snowfalls.

For example, New England got hit with a bigger storm on January 29th, 2022.  That storm dumped 14" on Augusta, 13" on Portland, 23 1/2" on Boston, and about 17" on Portsmouth.

If we were to narrow this week down to a single day we would have to guess either January 27th or January 29th.
