One of the great things about this job is that using social media counts as work.

In addition to scrolling through Facebook to find things to talk about and write about, we are constantly posting on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Because of the amount of time we all spend on social media, we are often the first to notice issues or strange things happening on Facebook and other platforms.

Earlier today, while using the Meta Business Suite, I noticed that some of the words had changed.  For example, instead of saying SHARES it now read TIAMENDU.  At first, I assumed it was some kind of strange glitch.  About an hour later, I opened my personal Facebook account and noticed that a lot of the text had changed there, too.

The craziest part was the language that it changed to.  I would not have been that surprised if it changed to French or Spanish, but that's not what happened.

At first, I thought that it had switched to Spanish, but when I ran it through Google Translator it told me the words were not Spanish.

After doing a little more digging, I figured out that it had switched to Guarani!  What's that?  Well, Google tells me that it is one of the major languages spoken in Paraguay.  It is a Native American language that is, as of 2024, spoken by about 6.5 million people.

I could not find the place in Facebook settings to change the language back (probably because I don't speak Guarani), but I was able to fix it by logging out and logging back in.  That makes me think it was a glitch and not that the language somehow got changed.

On top of that, I posted about it on Facebook (once my account was switched back to English) and immediately got several responses from people who had been dealing with the same issue.  It seems like each person has a different language.  One person's account changed to Spanish.  For another, it was a sudden change to French.

So far, Facebook has not posted about the issue and Down Detector does not show a significant amount of Facebook issues being reported.  Maybe the issue is only affecting a small percentage of users?
