Over the last few years, we have seen a number of Maine hospitals forced to make significant changes in how they operate due to staffing shortages and financial issues.

In some cases, these hospitals have had to close entire departments.  Several have been forced to close their birthing departments and at least one has had to close its emergency department.

In a rural state like Maine, this has led to some expectant mothers and seriously injured people needing to make lengthy trips to hospitals outside their immediate area.

In addition to the closure of some departments, many Maine hospitals have had to lay off employees.

For example, Central Maine Medical Center had to lay off 45 employees and sell two of its buildings in 2024.

It looks like help may be on the way for a handful of Maine hospitals.
