Even though many avid skiers are obsessed with the ski resorts of the Western United States, there is no denying that New England has some truly iconic ski areas.

Wildcat Mountain, Cannon Mountain, Sugarloaf, and Sunday River, to name just a few.

Have you always wanted to own a ski resort?  Here’s your chance!

Big Moose Mountain Ski Area

Located in Piscataquis County, Big Moose Mountain features 1,200 acres of mountainside terrain and a 1,700-foot vertical drop.  With spectacular views of nearby Moosehead Lake, the mountain offers a mix of easy terrain for beginners and more challenging terrain for experienced skiers and boarders.

The mountain’s chairlift only goes to mid-mountain, but the operation does have a snowcat capable of taking more advanced skiers to the summit.

The ski area has a base lodge that features a snack bar & grill and a rental shop.

If you are well-versed in New England ski history, you may know that the mountain used to go by a different name.  According to WGME, the ski area's name was changed from a derogatory name for Native American women to Big Moose Mountain in late 2021.

For over a decade, the ski area has been operated by a local non-profit called the Friends of the Mountain.  While the non-profit nature of the business somewhat limit the ski area's offerings, there are some major benefits.

The biggest of these is the fact that the ticket places are less than half of what you'd pay at some of the corporate-owned mountains.  While they have not posted ticket prices for the 2024/2025 season yet, we do know that last year's prices were $35 for kids and $40 for adults.

Of course, the property includes way more than just the mountain and its ski area facilities.

The listing for the property explains:

Alongside its expansive slopes, an additional 3050 acres including Fitzgerald Farm, Louis Peak and over 4 Miles of beach lined shorefront on Mountain View Pond. The chance to build a vibrant mountain community, coupled with private access to a 12-acre peninsula on Maine's largest lake, enhances this offering, making it a prime investment in a setting rich with natural beauty and outdoor allure.

The current list price is $27,000,000.  Providing the buyer has adequate capital, this humble ski area could easily become one of New England's premiere ski resorts.
