Beach to Beacon History

Cape Elizabeth native Joan Benoit Samuelson founded the Beach to Beacon 10K in 1998  to benefit children’s charities in Maine. She won the gold medal in the first-ever women's marathon at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The name comes from the marathon's route, which starts at Crest Beach State Park and ends at Portland Headlight.

Best Buddies Maine

Each year another Maine children's charity is chosen as the race's beneficiary. TD Bank announced in a press release that this year's beneficiary, Best Buddies Maine,  will receive $30,000.
