Hurricane Erin has battered the coasts of New York and New Jersey as it slowly gets pushed away from the US coastline. It didn't quite make it to New England, but it could be seen on the highest peak in New Hampshire.

Erin has started to move away from the coast, and it won't be a major threat to New England. We could see some high surf and dangerous rip currents, however. So you might not want to spend a day at the beach until Erin moves far enough away to calm the ocean down.

As Erin moved closer to New England, the Mount Washington Observatory live webcam got a good look at the clouds that formed Erin far in the distance. The observatory posted a photo on Thursday showing a wall of clouds in the distance. It shows you just how massive some of these hurricanes can be.

The Observatory also made a point that Erin is going to stay well offshore, only producing some high-level Friday and Saturday, like you see in their photo. The difference being that this view is 6,288 feet above sea level, the highest point in all of New England, even taller than Maine's iconic Mount Katahdin.

Just to be safe, Willard Beach in South Portland has closed the beach to swimming.

We've been lucky during hurricane season in Maine. They don't happen very often, but we've had a few big ones that created some major damage.

Two hurricanes hit Maine in 1954, named Carol and Edna. Donna struck Maine in 1960. And the two hurricanes I remember in my lifetime were Gloria in 1985 and Bob in 1991.
