3 Spooky New England Towns That Aren't Salem

Salem, New Hampshire, and Salem, Massachusetts are the two big dog towns for a good Halloween visit.

I'll never say anything bad about either of those places since I visit them every year around Halloween time for a nice old-fashioned spook.

But are they getting too played out? Are we sick of the same two places year after year?

Well if you are, here are some suggestions for alternate routes this season that would be fun to visit throughout every holiday this year.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Most new Englanders already know this, but downtown Portsmouth is absolutely beautiful during the holidays. They've got a way of dressing the streets and their little authentic shops so well that it creates a great atmosphere for a trip.

Damariscotta, Maine

I know, I know, who the hell goes all the way to Damariscotta if they don't have to, but I'm telling you they do fun things there for the holidays.

Haven't you ever heard of the giant pumpkin races in the Regatta?!

Stowe, Vermont

I say this one because my best friend is from Stowe, and we usually take a trip back home during the fall because of a haunted bridge she always talked about.

Turns out Conde Nast Traveler even named it one of the most haunted places in America.

According to them, Emily's bridge is 50 feet long and is said to be the site of a young woman's death by suicide in the mid-1800s.

The travel website said that the legend involves a woman named Emily who was supposed to meet her love at the bridge to elope but hanged herself when he didn't show.

"Today, Emily's ghost is said to maliciously haunt the site, clawing at passing cars and even scratching the backs of pedestrians until they bleed," according to Conde Nast Traveler.

The website also notes other spooky things allegedly on the bridge including voices and footsteps.
