Dive bars are a love language in my life. The more more rundown it is, the better the drinks are.I don't make the rules.

I get a kick out of the times I learn about a new dive bar in my area that I had no idea existed. That means it must be so good their regulars keep the location under wraps, right?. Or it could mean it's absolutely terrible, but always take the 50/50 chance.

Ruski's Portland, Maine

This tiny little bar trumps all other dive bars in the area, I said what I said. Most Portland locals would agree with me on this one because at any moment, this could break out:

This is the type of bar you go into knowing your drinks are going to be stronger than the devil's breath and you're not leaving sober, it's an unwritten rule.

This is the type of bar you don't feel judged at when you're being a degenerate and getting after mimosas on a Saturday before 10 a.m.

Brookside Food & Drink Westbrook, Maine

This place is actually an awesome combo of people watching at a high-top or getting after it karaoke style with your friends on their dance floor.

I'm embarrassed to admit I only found out about its' existence last year, but that's the point, right? Brookside in Westbrook is now absolutely in the rotation on the weekends in my pack especially since Frog & Turtle just permanently closed their doors.

Spring Point Tavern South Portland

If you're a repeat Willard Beach go-er or boater in the summertime, you know about this little bar across the street from the college.

This is always the night cap bar in my group after we spend the day on the boat and go embarrass ourselves on their dance floor. They actually have a cute outside area with picnic tables which makes it an ideal post boat bar.

The golden rule with dive bars, the grungier they are, the better they are. Period.
