There's nothing quite like a drive in Maine, whether you are riding along the coast, crossing the iconic green bridge into the state, or heading north.

And the highways aren't too bad either.

Thankfully, Maine doesn't have to deal with the insanity of having to cross what can feel like an overabundance of lanes like other highways in the U.S. Can you imagine having to navigate six or more lanes?

But that doesn't mean that it's all smooth sailing.

According to World Population Review, there is a 10-mile stretch of highway considered the most dangerous in Maine.

The report reveals that would be on I-95 from exit 19 (Wells) to exit 25 (Kennebunk), with 15 fatal crashes between 2000 and 2019.

While the fact that there are any number of fatal crashes is tragic, thankfully, it's nowhere near the top like Texas, Florida and California.

Instead, Maine sits near the bottom when compared with other states in the U.S. Only Vermont and North Dakota have fewer fatal crashes on their respective deadliest 10-mile stretches of highway.

According to the Maine Department of Transportation, there were 33,705 crashes across the state in 2023, including 127 that were tragically fatal.

Let's work to keep the fatal crash numbers down in the years to come on both the previously mentioned stretch of I-95 and all of Maine.

Simple actions like obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions, and wearing seat belts can make a huge difference in reducing crashes.

Together, drivers can ensure that our highways and roads remain a place of beauty and enjoyment, not tragedy.

After all, there’s nothing better than a peaceful drive in Maine, made even better when everyone gets to their destination safely.
