For years Mainers could put pretty much anything they wanted on a vanity plate, and we did!

There are around 124,000 vanity plates in Maine, or roughly 8% of the population. Many are clever, innocent, and cute.

This one belongs to a midwife and is for 'baby catcher'. Adorable.

But for a while, it was crazy the number of not-subtle-at-all license plates in Maine!

In 2022, Maine started to clean that up. New rules went into effect, according to News Center Maine, and letters went out to clean up and revoke vanity plates that came up short of the new standards.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows is a huge supporter of free speech, but she told News Center Maine that obscenities should not be on license plates, which are state property,

What I would say to those who want to engage in objectionable or questionable speech: Get a bumper sticker.

What can you put on a vanity plate in Maine?

Once the wild, wild west was reigned in, here's a guideline if you are thinking of getting a vanity plate in Maine. Maine's vanity plate rules are similar to New Hampshire's revised standards - no derogatory references to age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, or disability.

Also banned is language that incites violence, or is considered profane or obscene. This would not be allowed today.
