But for a while, it was crazy the number of not-subtle-at-all license plates in Maine!

In 2022, Maine started to clean that up. New rules went into effect, according to News Center Maine, and letters went out to clean up and revoke vanity plates that came up short of the new standards.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows is a huge supporter of free speech, but she told News Center Maine that obscenities should not be on license plates, which are state property,

What I would say to those who want to engage in objectionable or questionable speech: Get a bumper sticker.

What can you put on a vanity plate in Maine?

Once the wild, wild west was reigned in, here's a guideline if you are thinking of getting a vanity plate in Maine. Maine's vanity plate rules are similar to New Hampshire's revised standards - no derogatory references to age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, or disability.

Also banned is language that incites violence, or is considered profane or obscene. This would not be allowed today.
