When Mainers start saying things like "Nor'easter," "whiteout," and "stock up," you better believe a big snowstorm is predicted to hit the state.

Some storms can be brutal, walloping areas with mountains of snow, ice, and sleet, burying homes and cars, and sometimes even cutting power to thousands.

But how do you know you've experienced the real deal? After all, some states devolve into chaos when only a few inches happen to coat the ground.

Snowstorms in Maine

Now, if you're looking for an official description, the state of Maine's website does have one.

The state lists four different types of winter storms, including blizzards, ice storms, sleet storms and snow storms.

But a snowstorm? According to the state, that is defined as "seven inches or more within twelve hours OR ten inches or more within twenty four hours."

OK, sure, but how often do most Mainers skip the technical specifics and instead just blend all the types together and call it "one wicked big snowstorm" when the snow comes flying down from the sky and starts building up on the ground?

That, or, "just another day in Maine."

Of course, there are some tell-tale signs that it's a "real" Maine snowstorm and not just some lame dusting. Take a look at 11 of them below.

What is the most snow Maine has ever had?

Things are always likely to change, but according to Stacker, the biggest 1-day snowfall in Maine was in Franklin County on Dec 22, 2008, with a whopping 41.8 inches.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Portland's record of 27.9 inches in 1979 was beaten in 2013 when it was recorded that 31.9 inches piled up at the Portland International Jetport.
