This Hidden Gem Coffee Roaster in Buxton, Maine, Serves Up Some of the Best Brews
The major positive (or perhaps the only positive) of getting older is the maturation process of perspective. The bottom line is, you really start to appreciate the finer things in life.
I could sit here and describe a wealth of these 'finer things,' but there's one that significantly stands above the rest. It's become much more than a daily fix and more of a lovely passion. This 'finer thing' is one of nature's most perfect creations: coffee.
I've been drinking the stuff for the majority of my adulthood, but not with any real appreciation. However, as time went by, I matured. Flavorful black coffee and espresso drinks from local purveyors have replaced the instant coffee from fast food joints and gas stations. It's amazing what a little jump in quality can do.
Maine's Incredible Coffee Industry
This is easy to do in Maine, considering we have an amazing community of local coffee shops and stands that have delicious partnerships with sustainable suppliers, as well as many Mainers who roast their own blends.
And this is where my newfound love affair with a local coffee roaster begins—who just happens to live in my town of Buxton.
Buxton, Maine's Milkweed Coffee Roasters
I originally came across Milkweed Coffee Roasters at the Gorham Farmer's Market. These two wonderful ladies had a setup loaded with a variety of coffee styles, as well as pouring some of their creations. My wife and I immediately made our way over to them to sample the goods.
This is when we met Jennelee and Emma, the purveyors behind Milkweed Coffee Roasters. The two run their micro-batch coffee company from a beautiful farm in Buxton, which just happens to be right up the road from where we live.
Jennelee comes from a coffee roasting background, and Emma is a highly accomplished artist. This power duo is quite possibly the perfect combination for starting a successful company.
Milkweed Coffee is roasted right there on their farm and then immediately put up for sale to give the consumer the freshest roasted beans possible. It's literally the very definition of farm-to-table.
My wife and I immediately jumped right in, bought a few bags of beans to take home, and had a few of their Iced Dirty Chais, which are basically the official drink of our marriage.
The drink was exceptional. The coffee blended perfectly with the chai concentrate, which is also made in-house at Milkweed. The sweetness of the chai really comes through, without overpowering the perfect bitterness of the coffee.
As one could imagine, I was immediately blown away. Here was this delicious local coffee company that was quite literally right down the road, creating an amazing product.
How to Buy Milkweed Coffee
Milkweed offers a wealth of options, including a variety of regional styles, espresso roasts, half-caff and decaf, and even cold brew. They have online ordering, a coffee subscription service, and, of course, can be found at the Gorham Indoor and Outdoor Farmer's Market. They are even the house coffee for Cafe Luna, a hot new joint in Scarborough.
Running a successful coffee company is nothing new for Milkweed. In fact, Jennelee has been roasting coffee for nearly two decades at another spot she owns in Long Island, NY. I think we can safely say that we coffee lovers here in Maine are extremely lucky to have these two in our state.

I wish nothing but continued success for Milkweed Coffee Roasters as they continue to make their mark here in Maine and beyond. And, as a resident of Buxton, I absolutely feel the town pride with every sip of their product.
So, for all of you coffee lovers out there, it's time to take a trip to the next Gorham Farmer's Market, so you too can meet the team behind one of Maine's best products. Just make sure you don't drink all the Dirty Chai before I get there.
