Listeria Outbreak in Massachusetts

There are now 9 people dead from recalled Boar's Head Deli Meats, according to wwlp.com, andaAt least 57 people are sick, including three from Massachusetts.

The illness came from listeria contaminated Boar's Head products, according to the news station.

The article also says that it can take up to four weeks to determine whether or not a person who is sick is actually linked to the outbreak, so that number may be even higher and we don't know it yet.

There is a map that shows where the sick people are, most of them are in New York and New Jersey.

This is a full recall list for Boar's Head products that have been recalled.  Basically, if you purchased any of these products before July 31, 2024, throw it away.  The company has thrown away all products from their Virginia facility, totaling 7 million pounds of products, according to wwwlp.com.

Boar's Head Deli Meats are sold at many New England grocery stores including Hannaford, Market Basket and Stop & Shop.

If you've ever wondered why pregnant women can't eat deli meat, (which was never the case when I was pregnant) it's because of listeria.  It's a bacteria that can be fine for healthy adults, however, it can be fatal for unborn babies, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Some symptoms of listeria infection are:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle Aches
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

I also imagine that it's hard to diagnose.  If I got those symptoms, I don't think I would immediately think that it was the deli meat I had for lunch.

Listeria can develop on food already in your refrigerator.  Not this case here, however.  It's really hard to know what to eat these days.  I'm beginning to think that guy down the road with the pigs in his front yard and the beautiful gardens all over his property has the right idea.

Grow your own food, raise your own protein.  Easier said than done, I know, but I bet that's the future.
