A Waterboro, Maine, man took his own life after his wife was shot in the shoulder during what police called a domestic dispute Sunday afternoon.

York County Sheriff William King said sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a shooting on Lakeview Drive and found Elizabeth Rideout with a shoulder injury around 2 p.m.

Deputies tried unsuccessfully to talk to her husband, Jeremy Rideout, and got a search warrant to enter the home. A warrant was also issued for Jeremy Rideout, which brought a response from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Offices, Maine State Police, the Southern Maine Special Response Team, and the Emergency Services Unit.

Jeremey Rideout was found with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to King.

Elizabeth Rideout was treated and released from Maine Medical Center.

King did not disclose details about what led to the shooting.
