After years of local publication, the Portsmouth Herald, Foster's Daily Democrat, and several local newspapers will follow a nationwide trend and be printed out of their local coverage area.

Gannett, the owner of Seacoast Media Group, announced it will no longer use printing presses at the Pease Tradeport on March 19, and move publication to Auburn, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island. Delivery times for the newspapers will not change, according to Gannett.

Auburn is 90 minutes away from Portsmouth, while Providence is nearly two hours away.

What's Staying in New Hampshire

The newspapers will continue to maintain local editorial and sales offices. In the statement, Gannett did not disclose how many employees may lose their jobs because of the move.

"As our business becomes increasingly digital and subscription-focused, newspaper printing partnerships have become standard," the statement says. "We are making strategic decisions to ensure the future of local journalism and continue our outstanding service to the community."

Gannett prints its 11 daily and 50 weekly New Jersey newspapers at one facility in Rockaway in North Jersey.

Seacoast Media Group publishes Exeter News-Letter, Hampton Union, York Weekly, and York County Coast Star.
