A 15-year-old Gilford girl died while skiing at Gunstock Mountain Resort Monday afternoon.

General Manager Tom Day told the Laconia Daily Sun that Sydnie Quimby hit rocks and trees when she skied off the Derringer trail. Derringer is an intermediate level trail at Gunstock.

"Our hearts go out to her family at this difficult time," Day said in the statement to the Sun. "The entire Gunstock family was saddened by the incident today."

Quimby was initially taken to Concord Hospital-Laconia and then Dartmouth, where she later died from a head injury, Gilford Fire Chief Stephen Carrier told WMUR.

The freshman at Gilford High School also enjoyed horseback riding, and was a member of the Northeast Six Shooters with her grandfather.

"Such a bright light taken way too soon. Please hug your loved ones tight and give this family space," the group wrote on its Facebook page.

In a message to the school community, Gilford High School principal Anthony Sperazzo called Quimby's death a sad loss. The school was working to support students and staff.

"Sydnie loved life, animals, horseback riding, skiing, her chickens, kitties and dogs. She deserves nothing but the best, and all we want to do is make sure that is what she gets," Jessica Lachance wrote on a GoFundMe page created to help her family.
